Hardy Tradescantia are useful border plants with unusual 3-petalled flowers produced over a long period, nestled amongst long, sword-shaped evergreen leaves. Tradescantia virginiana is a particularly tall and vigorous species ideal for further back in the border. Abundant clusters of blue-purple blooms with contrasting yellow stamens are borne on slender, branching stems over a long period in summer. Height: 75cm (30in). Spread: 50cm (20in).
Grow hardy Tradescantia in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Cut back spent flower stems to stimulate reblooming and fresh new growth.
