Phormium Black Velvet

Linear, sword-like leaves form an arching, evergreen clump that makes a superb statement plant. Phormiums are grown for their striking appearance, and this one is certainly eye-catching with its dramatic, dark, bronze-black colouring. In late summer, Phormium ‘Black Velvet’ may also produce spikes of tubular red blooms. This architectural perennial adds punctuation to sunny beds and borders, and makes an excellent container plant for the patio. New Zealand Flax plants are low maintenance, and easy to grow, coping well in a wide range of conditions, including challenging coastal locations. Height: 90cm (36″). Spread: 60cm (24″). Grow Phormium on fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected position in full sun. Phormiums are well suited to mild coastal locations and can cope in poorer soils, but do enjoy a fertile soil – so it is well worth incorporating some well-rotted manure into the soil when planting.
