Dianthus ‘Starburst’ is a compact alpine pink that is ideal for adding a splash of colour to rockeries, gravel gardens and containers, and for edging sunny borders and paths. Stunning, fragrant semi-double blooms are produced from May right through to September above a neat mound of narrow greyish evergreen foliage. Intricately patterned with cherry red on a rose-pink backdrop, each frilly-edged petal is a work of art! Versatile and easy to grow, this favourite cottage garden perennial is happiest in a well-drained site in full sun. Height and spread: 20cm (8in).
Pot up plug plants and grow them on in frost free conditions for transplanting into borders and containers later on. When all risk of frost has passed, and plugs are fully rooted into their pots, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant Dianthus in beds and borders in fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
